Politics and Me

I initially intended to write this as part of my “other projects” page. When I noticed how long it was getting, however, I realized (to my astonishment) that I was actually writing a blog entry.

I have decided to stop doing politics outside of work. Though that decision may be a big surprise to some people, it’s what I need to do now, and maybe permanently.

Jason’s Birthday has an agenda

What I’ve been up to.

I uploaded a bunch of photos just now that you should look at, if you want to see what I’ve been up to. A few from my current trip to Philadelphia, and a bunch of photos from when my mom was in town.

iTunes not just for running nuclear facilities anymore

From the EULA for iTunes:

THE APPLE SOFTWARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR USE IN THE OPERATION OF NUCLEAR FACILITIES, AIRCRAFT NAVIGATION OR COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS, AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEMS, LIFE SUPPORT MACHINES OR OTHER EQUIPMENT IN WHICH THE FAILURE OF THE APPLE SOFTWARE COULD LEAD TO DEATH, PERSONAL INJURY, OR SEVERE PHYSICAL OR ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE.

Uh, yeah.

Misty Sloan-colored memories

This was the first Sloan show I ever went to, mere weeks after I moved to Minneapolis. [Sloan is a band I like.]

I tell the following story on that page, but there’s no reason to send you there now. I’d prefer that you keep reading this entry:

Importing old entries

Wow, pasting old anti-blog entries into this blog is quite a blast from the past. I’m trying to work from the past to the present, which is creating (so far) a big gap between a huge chunk of old entries and the few new entries I’ve added.

It is also reminding me how often I wrote in the old days, before I got old and jaded. Stuck in the youthfully exuberant entries from 2001 and 2002, I can only take solace in how little I’ve written in the last few years (meaning there’s less to paste into the “Write Post” screen).

Also, I wasn’t in the habit of titling my entries back then… but WordPress doesn’t work too well if you don’t give each post a title. So now I’m titling blog entries that I wrote 6 years ago. Weird.

walking precincts and taking off the pounds

Hey. I’ve been busy.

I’ve lost about 18 pounds or so in the last 3 months and one day that I’ve been doing the South Beach Diet thing. I have plateaued a little bit after some relatively rapid initial weight loss, but I’m keeping it all off. I think the key now is exercise. The trend overall for my health seems to be good.

National Pie Day!

At 11:15 pm on Monday, I was informed by the very credible “Culture Blog” (whatever) on sfgate.com that Monday was National Pie Day. At 11:15 pm. Damn it.

So Eric and I did what we had to do: we trekked down to Nation’s Giant Hamburgers and had pie. Mmm, delicious pie. At midnight, or just before. Thanks, National Pie Day.

our (splendid) community

What?!? It’s November?

Since starting this site in 2000, that’s the longest I’ve gone without writing. Sometimes I just don’t have much to say. I’ve been keeping in reasonable touch with people (some of them, anyway). Sorry about that.

A few things have happened. Mostly I’ve been getting acclimated to working a real job full time, and not canvassing. In short, it’s been great.

There’s more, but, you know, you might have to wait five months for it.

ornamental divider

Written in a tiny notebook with a spider on it (thanks, Amber!) in November 2001:

We will give serious consideration to any idea (concept or plan) that leads to the betterment (aesthetic or otherwise) of our (splendid) community.

—Jason Gohlke

[I have no idea what that’s supposed to mean, but it’s amusing out of context.]

equanimity and joy

Somehow it seems to have become my 30th birthday. I am approaching it with equanimity and, actually, a fair amount of joy. Things are going well. I am in the driver’s seat of my life and I like it.

My long-time friend Will now has a “vlog” (“video log,” of course), which is excellent. The best possible thing I could have woken up to today (after getting some nice calls yesterday) was Will’s entry for my birthday. All I can say is thanks. What a great, great guy.
